The book of Job corresponds to a very ancient era in the history of humanity. Nations and peoples began to develop from large families. They probably did not yet have any divine writings, except the book of Genesis. But the ancient history of humanity, with its main facts, was piously propagated orally, as was moral distance from God and wickedness. Piety and the fear of God and separation from evil were very strong among the lineage of faith. They were on guard against idolatry (31:24-28), from which Abram must have recently been called to escape (Gen. 12). They were in a living relationship with their God and had little knowledge of His ways.
Written before the alliance with a chosen people, before the divine law, this book has a very general scope. God desires to speak to us about matters that concern believers in all times and places. Are we ready to listen to those things that God so desires to communicate to our souls? For what ? Why does God allow so much suffering and seem unresponsive when the soul sincerely relies on Him? Only God will give him the right answer. And he will bring to the heart of Job an answer according to Him to the deepest questions he asks himself. A surprising divine response.
