Through the gospel, God lets his divine light penetrate into the depths of a soul. This, through the announcement of the cross of Christ who died for her sins, discovers the love of God which delivers her forever from future judgment and receives her as his child. The work of the evangelist is to present the gospel, to “communicate spiritual things.” These things must imperatively be communicated “by spiritual means” (1 Cor. 2:13). He must “plant” the Word of God in hearts, but also “water” them. It is individual work (1 Cor. 3:6). “Increase” is the work of God alone (v.6b). For the work of the evangelist to be effective, it is necessary to have previously been “ploughed” himself: “each shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are God's fellow-workmen; ye are God's husbandry…” (v.8-9)
