“All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Tim. 3:16). The four Gospels, which are part of the Word of God, are no exception to this. The evangelists each gave an account of the life of the Lord according to the character under which it was to be presented, and according to the purpose which the Spirit of God indicated to them. Thus, Mark speaks of the Lord as the perfect Servant and follows the chronological order closely; Matthew presents the Messiah, Son of David, promised to Israel, and the succession of God's dispensations, departing if necessary from chronological order; Luke tells us about the Son of Man, grace and the moral aspects of his ministry and often deviates, like Matthew, from the chronological order. John, who highlights the particular glory of the Lord as the Son of God, has a somewhat separate place.
Even though the Word of God can never be faulted, the correspondence of the gospels is not the primary goal of the Spirit of God. It must therefore be used with caution, and rather as a practical aid to better navigate the Gospels.
